"And whoever emigrates for the cause of Allah will find on the earth many [alternative] locations and abundance.

And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes him - his reward has already become incumbent upon Allah .

And Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful." Qur'an, 4:100

Re: Muhammad Is Top English Baby Name for Fifth Year Running
The ONS hasn't fully collated the stats yet, but last year 5% of boys' names were unique in the year (i.e., no other boy was called the same thing in that year), and 7% of girls' names were as well.

43,000 kids with monikers that have been recently made up, or are extremely old-fashioned.

Probably much more invention than returning to Æthelwold etc.

According to the ONS, in no year since 1904 have more than three Adolfs been born (names with counts less than or equal to three are not published, as the near-perfect anonymisation the ONS requires is difficult).

In that sense, World War II and the run-up to it has made no difference.

Interesting, that could be part of it. The numerous Iranian-Canadians I have meet do like to use the name Ali a lot which make sense since most are Shia or Shīʻatu ʻAlī "(of the party of Ali)." Others I knew were Ismaili which is a branch of the same.

Re: Muhammad Is Top English Baby Name for Fifth Year Running
The first stats on the split between Muslims I came across for the UK was: 95% Sunni, 5% Shia;

the first for Canada was 65% Sunni, 15% Shia, 20% other.

I haven't a clue whether these are accurate, or have anything to do with the matter in hand.

But you could easily spend an afternoon finding out...

Re: Muhammad Is Top English Baby Name for Fifth Year Running
(Some who knows more Muslim naming conventions or statistics maybe help me out )

I found the names interesting so I decided to compare them with home.

I found this strange.

Ontario, which has the about same percentage of Muslims as England and Wales (4.5% to 4.4%) did not have Mohamed in its top 25 (in 2015) whereas in England and Wales it was #8 as mentioned earlier.

Anyone have an explanation?

Doing a self build - trades are full of Kevins and Matts - mainly 30s and 40s. Re Eleanor - lived in Eleanor Road for years (50s)- the Stratford one not the Hackney one, so not totally upper class name.

To be fair to the Muslims they don't have too many names to choose from if it's a boy... I mean they can hardly be called Gary Miandad
